Friend,

As we approach Memorial Day, I want to take a moment to honor all our brave veterans who selflessly served our country — and to remember with immense gratitude and deep respect all those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom.

Memorial Day holds a special place in our hearts, serving as a powerful reminder of the countless men and women who answered the call of duty and laid down their lives to protect the values we hold dear. Their courage and commitment have shaped our nation's history, safeguarding the freedoms and liberties we enjoy today.

As we gather with family, friends, and neighbors — and as we participate in the various ceremonies and events taking place throughout our city to honor America's fallen, like tomorrow’s observance at the Chattanooga National Cemetery — let us reflect on the sacrifices made by our American heroes. Let's honor their memory by cherishing the ideals they fought to protect and by extending our support to the veterans among us.

In Chattanooga, we are fortunate to have a strong and vibrant community of veterans who continue to contribute to the fabric of our society long after their military service has ended. They bring their skills, knowledge, and experiences to various sectors, enriching our city and embodying the spirit of resilience and dedication.

I encourage you to consider reaching out to a veteran in your life, expressing your appreciation and support. Small acts of kindness can make a world of difference and remind our veterans that their service is valued and never forgotten. Together, we can create a community that truly understands the profound significance of their sacrifice and provides a welcoming environment for our heroes to thrive.

Like so many of you with loved ones who answered the call of duty, I think of my father who served in the 20th Infantry Regiment of the US Army. May this weekend be a time of gratitude toward all our veterans and, in particular, a grateful observance in memory of those who gave their lives. This Memorial Day, let's remember our responsibility to preserve the freedoms they fought so valiantly to uphold.

      Sincerely,
